Let Someone Else Do the Driving
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride with your local public transit agency!
- Spend less and reduce emissions: Save money on gas, parking, and car repairs, and help reduce CO2 by sharing the ride on transit.
- Get some YOU time: Taking transit allows you to enjoy your trip by taking you out of the driver’s seat. Relax with a book or podcast, play video games, scroll social media, or maybe even just enjoy the sights around you as you are driven to your destination.
Learn how to take transit and find resources from public transit agencies across Oregon to help make your commute, errands, or recreation trip better.
Tips & Best Practices for Taking Transit
No matter if it is your first time taking transit or if you’re a regular rider, here are a few tips and frequent questions to help you get the most out of your transit journey:
- The bus driver is there to help you. If you have a question, ask!
- Be considerate of other riders by using headphones and limiting phone calls.
- If your local transit agency offers real-time arrival information, find out how to access it, so you can be sure exactly when the bus will arrive!
- Check if you need to request your stop by pulling a cord or pressing a button, when in doubt check-in with the bus driver.
How do I plan my transit route?
- Get There Connect – Our free app and web tool helps you find suggested transit routes for your commute and includes information on locations to help connect you to and from the transit route such as Park and Ride and bike share locations.
- Check your local transit agency’s website! Your local transit agency will have the most accurate information on routes and schedules, and often times offers free resources such as one-on-one trip planning support. See the Local Resources section for more information.
It helps to plan your trip ahead of time and leave a bit of a buffer if you have a time sensitive appointment or start to your work day.
I don’t live near a transit stop, what do I do?
If you don’t live close to a transit stop, you can use another transportation mode to connect to the nearest transit. For example:
- You may be able to use a Park and Ride location to park near a transit center and complete your commute by transit.
- You could ride a bike, e-bike, or scooter to the transit stop and either lock it at the station or bring it on the bus or train with you. If your community has bike share it is a convenient way to connect to and from your route without needing to lock up or bring the bike or scooter along.
You can use Get There Connect to find a Park and Ride or bike share location along your route.
How do I pay for my fare?
Transit costs and payment methods vary across transit providers. Visit your local transit provider’s website for schedules, service announcements, and payment information.
You may also want to check with your employer if your benefits includes a transit pass or reimbursement for transit costs.
